10 Tips To Help You Design A Great Poster

Posters are one of the most successful marketing communication materials there is out there. They are also relatively affordable even for a small business.

As well as being relatively cheap, they are also easy to create with tools like Canva.

There are a few elements to take into consideration though, so your design is successful.

Here are 10 tips I would like to share with you:

1. Visualise your target audience. Make sure that you know who you are targeting so you know what theme, graphics, colours, font to choose and what content to write.

2. Use colours that catch the viewer's eye. Colours should complement or contrast each other.

3. Use the right fonts for the message conveyed (e.g. elegant font if you are beautician, formal font if you are a solicitor, etc...). Make sure you use no more than 2 fonts per poster.

4. Create a typography hierarchy: heading, sub-heading and body text. The heading is your headline message: it should grab the reader's attention. The sub-heading supports your heading: It gives a bit more information about your message. And finally the body text covers all the other essential details.

5. Make your call-to-action your central point (front or centre of poster).

6. Use portrait orientation. It is ideal for digital use (e.g. social media platforms).

7. Choose your alignment (e.g. left, centered, right or justified).

8. Align objects and text to create symmetry. Symmetry is eye-catchy and also very appealing.

9. Add graphics to your poster: Images speak louder than words. Make sure that your text and images complement each other.

10. Make correct use of the negative space (area that surrounds text/image). It is as essential as the positive space in your design. You need to find the right balance to make your composition more attractive.

Once you have designed your poster, all you need to do is find the best location for it: whether it is online or in a physical location, remember that location is key. Place it where you believe it will be seen by your target audience and where it will stand out.

Good luck!
